Saunton Beach prepares for Devon D-Day 2016!
After months of planning, The Friends of the Assault Training Centre are making final preparations for a busy weekend of military themed fun at Devon D-Day 2016.
Following the success of Devon D-Day 2015, the commemorative event is returning to the golden sands of Saunton this weekend (Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th June). The event will run from 10am until 4pm each day.
With up to 10 wartime aircraft expected to land on the beach on Saturday, as well as a pyrotechnic display and living history re-enactments, Devon D-Day ’16 is set to be a weekend to remember!
The Friday will focus on hands-on activities for kids – living history groups will be on site giving children the opportunity to ask questions about life in 1944, explore vehicles, and take part in an interactive quiz – it’s the perfect antidote to half term boredom!
The main event will take place on Saturday when up to 10 wartime planes are expected to land on the beach at 11am to form a static display. Visitors will have the opportunity to view these beautiful examples of wartime engineering up close and learn about their history. We strongly recommend arriving early so as not to miss the aircraft landing on the beach; it’s going to be impressive!
There will be exciting shows from living history groups taking place throughout the day on Saturday, as well as a pyrotechnic display of a pillbox assault (complete with smoke, bangs and lots of pyrotechnics!) from First Wave 44. There will also be a selection of stalls and displays from military groups and enthusiasts. Entertainment and music will be provided by “Sandy Sparkle” and Arthur Cook.
The Friends of the Assault Training Centre have released the following itinerary for Saturday. Plane landing and departure times are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment!
11:00 Aircraft arrive
12:00 Beach Assault
14:30 Aircraft depart
15:00 Sandy Sparkle sings
16:00 Beach convoy
Displays/exhibitions will be open from 10am on both days.
Devon D-Day is kindly supported by Saunton Beach Enterprises and Saunton Sands Hotel.
